It is 18th century Germany. Munchhausen pays a fleeting visit to from soldiering to see his father then meets Count Cagliostro who rewards him with eternal life for saving his life. Munchhausen goes to Moscow and woos Catherine the Great and fights a "kuk-kuk" duel with another of her lovers. In her wars with the Turks he gets fired on a cannon ball into the Turkish lines and taken prisoner. There he regales and Sultan with tales and rescues a Venetian beauty from the harem and sails for so on... This is probably Josephf Goebbels finest work, and not a hint anywhere of German... The production was faultless, the special effects superb, and the Agfa colour film looks as if it were filmed today. This is probably Josephf Goebbels finest work, and not a hint anywhere of German National Socialism. Pure family entertainment. A pity about the subtitles, but then you cannot have everything.
And it is intriguing to try to read the reason why Goebbels was so sold out on this story, it apparently has very few things in common with Nazi ideology. Munchausen is a kind of german superhero in the film, who beats time and ageing. But also a tall story teller, who despises power and money, and only cares for beautiful women and adventures, rather distant from the aryan superman stereotype. The takes of Venice over sixty years ago are wonderful...

The print quality, on this 2003 Eureka DVD, while restored, is a little wavery in places, but overall the picture is good with its soft, dated, muted colours. With a running time of 110 minutes, it's a little shorter than Gilliam's epic too - but the DVD does have a bonus fifteen-minute video essay that puts 'Munchhausen' in its historic context. They knock spots off the frothy, loud and garrulous US films of that period. This one is particularly interesting because the script was written by banned writer Erich Kastner, it is one of the first films made in Agfa colour and, I think it was Himmler, had the stately homes of Europe scoured for furnishing for the sets.

His recent book The Earth Dies Streaming, a collection of film reviews, is a treasured tome of many film programmers for its sharp wit and acerbic humor.
