Described by writer/director Paolo Rotondo as a "drama about how adults need kids as much as kids need adults", Orphans & Kingdoms follows three teens on the run, who break into a holiday home to hide out. Then the owner (Colin Moy, who played the brother of the main character in In My Father's Den) arrives home, followed by the police. Shot on Waiheke Island, the low-budget Escalator film had a sell-out world premiere at the 2014 Auckland Film Festival, before winning a Moa award for best editing. Best known as an actor, Rotondo won awards for writing short film Dead Letters. I lived on Waiheke Island for 10 years … I was blown away by the massive disparity between people's wealth and lifestyles that is even more pronounced on the island and I wondered about those kids who weren't as lucky as mine. – Paolo Rotondo on website Darren's World of Entertainment, 15 July 2014 Produced by FB Films MakeYourMark

Low budget and local all too often translate to what's basically a TV movie bunged up on the big screen. In his feature debut, writer/director Paolo Rotondo deftly avoids all the usual clichés and pitfalls, cleverly keeping the action largely confined to a home under siege, and delivering that rarest of micro-budget gems – a real honest-to-the-moniker movie. a contrast to the wilderpeople If you go to the Wilderpeople one week and then go to this movie you'll think about how you laughed through Ricky's cameo of doing bad stuff. Here we see young people doing similar bad stuff and it seems, well, really bad. Here a darker Ricky and his siblings are portrayed in grittier and, sometimes, more realistic environment. Only sometimes though... weed saw it yesterday at Gala opening..,. beautiful movie loved every moment of it... gripping tale filmed in Waiheke Beautiful Movie Very good every moment of it.. gripping and very well written Kiwi Must Watch! Amazing performances from all of the cast!

Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2020 Verified Purchase Used to be movies about orphans and poor kids who simply had nothing and had to make there way on PBS back in the 70's. Nothing this rough, but the story lines were the same, kids filling in the gaps left behind by parents who could not raise them. Kids will create their own morality from what they see and experience. If their minds aren't channeled into school projects and sports, they make direct experience their teacher. It's a harsh life for kids who have to make decisions based on where they will sleep tonight, and how they will find food. The poor and their children will fill in the cracks of society in any way they can to survive. This movie had potential, hard to know what they cut out to make it work. I like stories of independence and imagination. Look at how dreadful and abusive the Simpsons are as a group, but they stick together.

Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2020 Verified Purchase This is a brilliant look at the grim reality of the effects of drug abuse on families: and while in most cases the adult(s) choose the path, the children and sometimes even the spouse are thrust upon it to fend for themselves. This film is not for the faint of heart, but ultimately it's about love, and forgiveness, and sticking together no matter what. Definitely not for children under 13 I would think, there is some violence and things inappropriate for those younger. It is a hard look, but a real one. Well done. I always appreciate an edgy film that makes me see what life is like for underprivileged children, yet while well filmed, I just couldn't feel emotionally connected to any of the characters, and the circumstances seemed far fetched.
